DOS Tightens Interview Waiver Rules – Effective Oct. 1, 2025

The Department of State will narrow the eligibility for visa interview waivers.

Main Changes

  • Eligibility: Most nonimmigrant applicants, including those under 14 or over 79, now need in-person interviews except:
    • Certain diplomatic/official visas (A, G, NATO, TECRO E-1).
    • Renewals of B-1/B-2 or H-2A visas within 12 months, issued at full validity, with the applicant at least 18.
  • Requirements: Applicants must apply in their home country, have no unresolved refusals, and show no ineligibility.
  • Discretion: Consular officers can still require interviews on a case-by-case basis.
