Founded as the Alkebu-lan Martial Arts Federation in 1978, Alkebu-lan Village’s original purpose was to provide affordable martial arts training for African-American youth. Over the years, the organization expanded to include youth and adult sports and fitness, leadership training, visual and performing arts, homework assistance and tutoring, youth entrepreneurship training and community service. Launching its new identity as Alkebu-lan Village in November 2000, the organization currently provides educational, cultural, and recreational programs to over 1,000 Detroit youth and their families each year through on-site and outreach programs. St. Joseph Family Support Foundation is a 501(c) public charity whose main mission is to stimulate the spirit of community awareness and giving to those who are less fortunate in the greater Metro Detroit area and its surrounding areas in the state of Michigan. St. Joseph provides emergency assistance to families of orphans and widows/widowers who are in a dire financial situation due to the loss of a main income earner. Founded in 2009 in memory of Alana Yaksich, who died of influenza at the age of five in 2003, Alana’s Foundation’s mission is to prevent deaths caused by influenza, a vaccine preventable disease, and provide support for families whose child has died from any illness. Alana’s Foundation provides influenza education and awareness with a focus on offering convenient and affordable flu vaccination options. Founded in 1962, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital’s mission is to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment.
