Switzerland – Integration Required for Some Permit Holders

The Swiss government has implemented a policy for foreigners to integrate. Foreign nationals obtaining temporary residence (B permits) and permanent residence (C permits) may now be required to sign an integration agreement and take language courses.
The one year transition period will begin January 1, 2019, which will allow the applicant to obtain a certificate from other than an official recognized language institute to prove their language skills.
Permanent Residence (C Permit)
- Permanent residence holders residing in Switzerland for 10 years will require level A2 oral and A1 in written language skills.
- Permanent residence holders residing in Switzerland for 5 years will require level B1 oral and A1 written language.
- Spouses of C permit holders will be required to meet integration requirements, included level A2 oral and A2 written language.
Temporary Residence (B Permit)
- Extension applications for temporary residence will require a level A1 oral language or equivalent of the place of residence.
- Family reunification will require a level A1 oral language or equivalent skills in the place of residence.
