POLAND – Non-EU Workers No Longer Automatically Issued ID Number

Effective immediately, Polish authorities have changed their procedures so that non-EU employees no longer automatically receive a PESEL number, an 11-digit number used for identification purposes. The PESEL number enables Polish residents to utilize government office, bank, and hospital services. Additionally, non-EU workers whose salary is paid in Poland are now required to obtain a NIP, or “tax identification number.” This requirement is waived for those who are posted to Poland. Without the PESEL number, these non-EU nationals will be required to use their passports for daily identification procedures.
