EGYPT – New Labor Market Testing Requirement

In an effort to address local unemployment rates, Egypt’s Ministry of Manpower has recently begun performing labor market testing prior to the issuance of any work permits to foreign nationals. If an Egyptian worker is found suitable for the position, the work permit application will be denied. The addition of this new procedure is expected to have a significant impact on processing times. Previously, work permit processing took anywhere from 15 to 60 days based on the nationality of the applicant. This change also requires that work permit applications include a detailed job description, proof of work experience, and a description of the benefits to the host Egyptian company as a result of the applicant’s work.
