Russia – Health Insurance Requirements Enforced for Work Permits

The Central Bank of Russia announced new health insurance rules in September 2015 that have taken into effect May this year. Employers hiring foreign nationals via work permits or work patents must now include proof of health insurance coverage. The coverage is required to show an insured sum of at least 100,000 Rubles and covers the area of where the employee will work, and the surrounding district area, over the duration of the work permit.

The enforcement of the insurance coverage currently pertains to the Moscow region only, however, other regions in Russia are expected to impose the requirements of the insurance coverage as well. Work permit applications without the required insurance coverage will experience a delay in processing.
