IRELAND – Smart-Card System to Cause Processing Delays

As the Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB) is still working on implementing the newly created smart-card system, applicants can expect continued delays in the processing of their multiple-entry visas. The smart cards, which contain biometric data and are issued to all foreign nationals registering as residents in Ireland, are causing significant delays at the GNIB. Multiple-entry visa applicants have been arriving to the GNIB early in the morning before its opening and oftentimes wait all day without receiving service. Foreign nationals who live outside Dublin are permitted to apply via mail, but processing of these applications requires a minimum of ten days. Companies and assignees should be aware of this matter and prepare to arrive early at the GBIB. These applicants should also keep in mind the possibility of waiting at the GNIB without receiving service.
