Germany – New Salary Threshold for Blue Card EU

The annual salary for the Blue Card EU will increase to EUR 53,600 (up from EUR 52,000) beginning January 1, 2019. In certain shortage occupations the salary threshold is reduced to EUR 41,808 per year (up from EUR 40,560).

Foreign nationals must meet the below requirements in order to be eligible for the Blue Card EU:

  1. Offered local employment by a German company
  2. Hold a university degree comparable to German standards
  3. Receive an annual salary of EUR 53,600 (2019)

Action Items

Employers should note new minimum salary levels for 2019 and ensure that upcoming applications meet the new criteria.
