Germany – Minimum wage and EU Blue Salary Increase
Beginning January 1, 2017, the national minimum wage in Germany will be raised from 8.50 Euro to 8.84 Euro per hour. The increase will result in a gross minimum salary of 1,532 per month for a 40 hour work week, regardless of the foreign national’s residence status. While Germany does not have minimum salary requirements for its foreign workers, it is critical that salaries commensurate with what a local resident would expect to receive for the same position.
Also beginning January 1, the minimum salary of the EU Blue Card will be raised to 50,800 from the current salary of 49,600. The EU Blue Card is available to Non-EU foreigners who are offered local employment by a German company, on the condition they hold a university degree comparable to German standards. The new salary threshold will not affect current Blue Card holders, except for any new or renewal applications after January 1, 2017.
