Dubai – Health insurance now mandatory

The Dubai Health Authority announced that as of June 30, 2016 employers in Dubai must provide health insurance coverage to all residents and visitors. Employers will be required to supply, at the least, standard coverage. In addition, dependents must also be covered under the health insurance plans. The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai (GDRFA) will monitor health insurance coverage and may not issue or renew residence permits without proof of coverage.

Employers should note that delays in providing proof of coverage may result in processing issues. Further, noncompliance could result in fines or denials.

For reference, corporations employing 100 to 999 workers have been complying with this requirement since July 31, 2015.
