CANADA – Extension Applications Advised to be Submitted More Than 90 Days Prior to Expiry

In continuation of our previous news alert regarding major delays to processing times for extension applications, the CIC has acknowledged the need to accept extension applications submitted in Canada 90-180 days prior to the permit’s original expiration date. The substantial increase in processing times for extension applications in recent months has reached an average of 114 days which is far greater than the earlier average processing time of nine days that was valid in November 2014.

CIC informally recommends submitting domestic extension applications 30-90 days prior to the date of expiry. However, in response to the severely delayed processing times, CIC has stated that they will no longer oppose applications submitted more than 90 days prior to the permit’s original date of expiration.
